What is acquisition?
There are two types of acquisition: offensive and defensive.
Offensive acquisition is a strategy that seeks to specifically acquire a particular company to expand the company’s range of offerings, gain additional market share, accelerate geographical expansion, or move upmarket in its positioning. These strategies create value since the companies that practice them are more resilient to market movements. These strategies also allow presenting a broader offer to end customers, who are often looking for players capable of intervening across a wide spectrum, facilitating the management of the customer-supplier relationship.
Defensive acquisition is a business strategy consisting of engaging in a policy of acquiring smaller-sized companies operating in the same sector of activity. By acquiring these companies, the company protects itself from takeovers by other competing companies by reaching a critical size in a targeted market. These strategies can also allow for the emergence of Pure Players, considered as references in their sector, enhancing their commercial attractiveness, and therefore their value.
